The Snow Globe

I am so tired of writing posts and not publishing them, so tonight, I'm just going to write whatever comes to mind for five minutes, and I AM going to post it. No matter what it says, that's what you get.

We got a snow globe today. I'm writing about it because it's sitting on my desktop. Not my actual 3-D desk top, but my computer desktop. My cousin sent us one last year, and my kids LOVED it. This year's is from the Edwardian era. It's just very Downton Abbey.

I downloaded it today. Tonight, as I was making dinner and music was pumping out of my computer, #6 saw the snow globe. He got SO excited. "Can I do it? Now?"

This was a great carrot. I dangled it for all it was worth.

He got right to work and finished everything on his checklist. He is now so prepared for tomorrow. I'm actually looking forward to waking up in the morning just for the fact that this kid has it together. He'll be ready to go, will waltz over to the refrigerator; grab his lunch; get on his shoes, coat and backpack; and we'll be on our way....Just like that. LOVELY!

This snow globe is not merely a shake-it-up kind of snow globe; it's an advent calendar. It actually starts to be really fun on December 1st when each day has it's own activity, but up until then, you can do puzzles, a game, or make snowflakes. It really is beautiful. I love that it is part of our Christmas tradition for a second year.

Thank you, C.J.!

I'm thinking that with this as an option, December's going to be a smooth-sailing month. They'll all get it all done every night just so they can play with the offerings of the snow globe.

The Feelings of a Ten-Year-Old

Some things just need to be kept for posterity's sake.

Last night, I asked each of the kids to sit down and write a special letter for their sister for her Christmas book. Not their usual here's-what-happened-this-week letter, but something with their feelings in it. The book will be taken Monday to ship out, so today is the day that everyone writes. I got one child to write his last night so there wouldn't be such a time crunch today.

This morning, I read that letter. Here's what it said:

"hello

"My testimony is that Joseph smith translated the book of Mormon and that jesus christ will come again. I also know that jesus christ was born under a star that was brighter then all the others i also know that he will come again and that missionaries will help everyone i hope that is what you are doing.

"loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove

This just made me smile too much not to share.

While the Troops are Away

Head's spinning with thoughts and ideas. Forgive me while I let them out....gotta relieve some pressure.

image: advantagerealestate.com
Originally, the plan was that we were all going to go to the beach for Memorial Day weekend, but as things started to come together, it ended up that our three oldest each had commitments here in town. The plan became that the Warden would take the youngest kids to the beach, and I would stay behind with #s 1, 2, and 3.

As it turned out, I have accomplished SO much that I wouldn't have otherwise. It's astounding how much I use my children as an excuse not to do things. Sad, I know.

Yesterday, I was able to finish almost all of the laundry (and it was a HUGE amount), go through #7's clothes and organize them into her drawers, clean a portion of the garage, clean out the bookshelves, clean out all of the bathroom drawers in the kids' bathroom, make huge progress on painting #6's bedroom, and got through an ENORMOUS amount of paper.

If I ever become a hoarder, it will be because the paper will eventually overcome and win the battle that I attempt to fight every day. Man, oh man!

We sat and watched a couple movies last night. While we watched, I sorted paper.  Most of it got recycled, but there was still a lot to file. Wow! I seriously have a paper fear.

I figure I have one more day. I'm going to finish filing papers, clean out the fridge, clean out the other bathrooms' storage areas, help the girls go through their stuff, finish the laundry and fold it and put it away, go grocery shopping, and treat #3 and myself to a mini shopping trip.

I pulled #3 into the Dressing Your Truth thing. She's super excited about it, so as a treat, we're going to
buy ourselves one item that fits our type. I'm a 1; she's a 3.

There are secondary types too, but I haven't figured those out yet. I remember when I was a teenager, there was a similar kind of typing. They'd take different colors and hold them just under your face. If they looked good on you, they could figure out which "season" you were. I was a spring but was considered a "cool spring" because I could wear winter colors too. Today, I read something that said these can be compared with the season system.

Type 1s are springs, so that fit perfectly. I thought I was a secondary type 2, but that I have so many strong opinions and am constantly fighting myself about whether to write them or not, I figure I might just be a secondary 4, which would be a winter. That fits also.

So looking forward to tomorrow and getting more done around here before the troops return. NEVER again will I let the paper overtake me like it has up to this point. Filing that stuff is going to be a huge priority tomorrow. While I'm working on that and the other things I listed, the kids'll be finishing the touching up and trim for #6's room. It's going to feel so good to get these big projects done!

Red Dye Success...FINALLY!

image: tumblr.com
Halloween may have been a complete failure, but Valentine's Day was SWEET SUCCESS!!!

I went to the Dollar Tree two days before Valentine's Day and purchased four bags of chocolate candies--Snickers, KitKats, Milky Ways, and Resee's Peanut Butter Cups. They were the mini size candies.

#1 and I, as one of the miraculous money earning opportunities that has come her way, were out delivering flowers together all that day. What a BLAST! Thank you, Natalie, for asking us to do this!

#3 was given the candies and asked to trade Sweetie for the candy he got at school. I made Sweetie promise that he wouldn't eat any candy until he got home, but knowing how hard it is for a kid to see his entire class eating candy and not do it himself, I bent my rule just a bit and told him not to eat any unless it was chocolate. He agreed.

The high schoolers got home and a few minutes later, the elementary schoolers arrived. The exchange took place.

I wasn't sure what I'd find when we got home from delivering flowers, but all seemed to be fairly peaceful. Again, today, peace.

WOAH! It worked! Sweetie didn't eat any red dye candy. I'm so very proud of him!

Red Dye Ruined Halloween

Life has been rather serene lately. We have hit a good pace....until yesterday.

image: woodwardgallery.net
Circumstances were such that Sweetie got a hold of a red ring pop. We often see ring pops in the grocery store and other kids have brought them home from time to time. The things are HUGE and give hours of sugary satisfaction. Personally, I think they're GROSS, but I'm a purely chocolate person, so there you have it. If it ain't chocolate, I'm not wasting my time.

image: themonogrammerchant.com
Even at Sweetie's birthday, when store-bought cupcakes were brought, Sweetie mentioned first thing, I can't have those. That was HUGE, and I was so proud at that moment that we'd made some headway. I mean seriously, who doesn't want one of those cupcakes with the inches and inches of fluffy goodness on top?!

I honestly think Sweetie didn't think. The thought was more of the nature of the item than the color of it.

Anyway, we didn't catch it quick enough, but it was taken away quickly once it was found. I was hopeful that we'd not have too much hubbub because of it.

Oh! Was I wrong!!!

image: c-ville.com
At school, Sweetie's work was erratic and hurried. I volunteered in the classroom, so I was able to observe it first hand. After school, things got crazy. We have a new hole in a door. There were other extremely negative things that happened, but I will refrain from mentioning them here. I just want to give a little taste of what red 40 does to our child. Without red 40, these things NEVER happen. The only thing I can compare the effect of red 40 to is bipolar disorder--from sweet to psycho in no time flat.

image: nwfdailynews.com
There seems to be some amount of disconnect with Sweetie. This is the same with a couple of my children. The idea that actions lead to consequences just doesn't compute. With all that was going on, I could not see sending this child out into the night to collect up more red items to cause more of this kind of chaos. I understand that Sweetie's behavior was affected by an outside substance, but a drunk driver is still prosecuted, isn't he? Sweetie had to account for choosing to have red dye. There must be a point where Sweetie starts to understand that the benefits of not having it are greater than succumbing to the desire for it.

Sweetie finally took a nap and was wakened for dinner. The Warden and I took Sweetie aside and shared that trick or treating just wasn't going to happen. It broke my heart. Let me just tell you, the phrase in the scriptures about "weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth..." Yup. I totally get that one now.

image: sodahead.com
We did however, tell Sweetie that we needed someone in costume who would hand the candy to the trick or treaters. That job was Sweetie's. Somehow that helped, and Sweetie did a fantastic job.

After the Warden left with the other kids, I turned on a movie for us to watch and Sweetie snuggled right in to my shoulder. When the doorbell rang, I paused the show, and Sweetie took care of the necessary actions to make sure everyone was happy. There were no more tears.

image: examiner.com
One other deal was made that we all agreed upon....When they got home, those who trick or treated would share ten pieces of candy with Sweetie. This way we could control just what was consumed.

I was pleasantly surprised to see my trick or treaters arrive home and so generously share with Sweetie. I remember practically placing armed guards around my Halloween candy as a child.

For the future, I'm afraid that unless something is done to ban red 40, our family is going to have to come up with a new plan for celebrating Halloween. Poor Sweetie!

Oh, by the way, even those carmel apple suckers have red dye in them.
